SUMMARY:September 2024 - Taming the Duck Curve With V2G
DESCRIPTION:A major problem with solar power is that the time of generation does not match up with time of use. This results in what is called the duck curve where there is an over abundance of power mid day and heavy power use in the evening. Batteries are used to store the day excess and give it back in the evening. This adds additional cost to effective use of solar systems. \nBut what if your vehicle’s battery could be used to bridge the supply/usage gap? You’ve already paid for the battery; all you need is the connection.  Vehicle to Grid (V2G) does not need to be used just to supply emergency power during a blackout. V2G has the potential to help both home solar and the utility grid. \nCome hear Jose Torre-Bueno of the Center for Community Energy tell us how this could work and legislation moving forward so that all EVs will be V2G capable. \nPlease RSVP on MeetUp so we can plan for pizza.

SUMMARY:October 2024 - Checking Your EV Battery
DESCRIPTION:The traction battery in an EV represents 40-50% of the vehicle’s value. Knowing its health is important when buying or selling a used one. Knowledge is also useful when getting close to warranty expiration. \nFor October\, we will hear from Smartville\, A Carlsbad company that makes a battery pack testing kit that provides insights on electric vehicle battery’s health. Their PeriscopeTM supports a wide range of EV makes and models\, delivering battery diagnostics on both in-vehicle and extracted batteries. It offers EV battery testing with in-depth analysis\, including state-of-health evaluations at the cell\, module\, and pack levels using OEM Battery Management System (BMS) data. \nJoin us to learn about battery health and how it can be tested. Smartville is planning to have a battery assessment tool available for anyone interested and with a compatible vehicle (Tesla 3/Y\, Chevy Bolt/EUV\, Nissan Leafs\, and a few others). Testing will be done in the parking lot after the indoor meeting. \nPlease RSVP on MeetUp so we can plan for pizza.

SUMMARY:April 2025 - Best ROI Going All Electric
DESCRIPTION:Who doesn’t want to get the best ROI (Return on Investment) going all electric? \nWhile SDGE rates discourage anyone from using more electricity\, combining a properly sized solar and storage system with home electrification can make going all-electric cost effective for California families and business owners. \nFor April\, we will have long time EVAoSD member and EV driver\, Kathy Nicholson\, talk about her experience going all-electric at home\, including installing a whole-home battery backup system. She even had SDGE remove the gas service to her house. \nKathy will also go over the newly-released report from the Agile Electrification Project at the UCSD Design Lab entitled Solar & Electrification – Flexible Pathways for Energy Independent Homes in California which compares the cost effectiveness of electrifying California homes with and without installing solar and batteries. \nBe sure to RSVP on MeetUp so we can plan for pizza.

SUMMARY:September 2025 - E-Fueling the Delivery Trucks
DESCRIPTION:Driving an EV is a no brainer for many of us. Charging at home is so effortless that we soon forget the hassle and smells of using a gas station. But what about all those trucks that keep all the goods flowing through our economy? Oil prices can have a significant impact on UPS and Amazon delivery costs. How about the trucks that keep Costco and Walmart stocked? Expansion of distribution hubs are getting a lot of pushback because of pollution – because of both fumes and noise. \nOur September presentation will be by Skycharger.  They have been building out charging for light and medium duty trucks since 2013. One of these is the Tidelands Avenue Electric Truck Hub (EHub) project. It will be a major step towards the Port meeting its 2030 goal of 100% zero-emission trucking to improve air quality and healthier portside communities. The EHub will support the replacement of dirty diesel trucks with clean electric trucks by deploying 70 fast charging stations\, along with a solar array and battery storage. The EHub will reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, improve air quality\, reduce noise pollution\, and increase opportunities in National City and other neighboring communities. \nCome learn about how EHub and other projects impact you even if you don’t own a truck.

SUMMARY:October 2025 - Power Your Home From Any EV
DESCRIPTION:Battery backup for home energy needs has always been a great way to balance generation and demand. The problem has been justifying the up front cost of the battery. What if you could use your EV battery while it is parked at home? Not all cars are set up to support this. \nOr are they? Sigenergy has come up with a way to implement bi-directional flow with almost any EV – even Teslas. Join us as we hear from Steve Branch about their system that integrates solar\, grid power\, and EV batteries. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup so we can plan for pizza.
