SUMMARY:January 2024 - SB350 and you
DESCRIPTION:How does SB350 impact you – both as an EV driver and as a resident of California? How much is a carrot and how much is a stick? \nThe Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act (Senate Bill 350) established clean energy\, clean air\, and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals\, including reducing GHG to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. The California Energy Commission is working with other state agencies to implement the bill. \nJason Greenblatt\, a senior program analyst at Energetics\, will be sharing his insights from the evaluation his team helps produce on progress of public charging and fleet projects across California within SB350. Jason has planned for and reported on EVs for over 15 years. Hear him talk about such topics as public DC fast charging and Vehicle to Grid (V2G). Bring your questions. \nJoin us as we again meet at the San Diego Automotive Museum. Be sure to RSVP so we can plan for pizza. \n  \nNote that the tour of Arcimoto originally scheduled for January had to be postponed due to a plumbing leak at their facility.

SUMMARY:San Diego Auto Show
DESCRIPTION:December means it’s time for the annual San Diego International Auto Show. We will again have a booth and need volunteer staff. Volunteers will answer questions about the EV experience and share information to advance the adoption of EVs. You don’t need to be a subject matter expert – just bring your enthusiasm. The show runs for four days which we will break up into three-hour shifts. Even though the show opens to the public at 10am\, first shift volunteers will need to arrive early to open up the booth. \n \nIf you would like to volunteer\, please go to evaosd.org/volunteer and let us know the days that you can be available (yes more than one if possible) and your preferred time slots (morning\, mid day\, afternoon\, evening). We would like to have at least two people staffing the booth at all times. Details about tickets and parking will be supplied to those responding.

SUMMARY:October 2023 - Navigating the Used EV Marketplace
DESCRIPTION:For October we’re putting together a Zoom meeting covering what you need to know about buying or selling a used EV. Keith will be joining from the Automotive Museum for anyone that wants to participate “in person”. Meeting via Zoom will facilitate greater participation by eliminating a long drive through heavy traffic for many members \nWe are working on having used car dealers\, repair shops\, and other businesses give their perspective. We would also like individuals to join in and relate experiences on both sides of the transaction. There will also be some discussion about the incentives available when purchasing a used EV. Bring your questions and we’ll do our best to find you an answer. \nPlease register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIkde2rpjMsGdEiJdssDwZ4UOt_AAioQH8N

SUMMARY:August 2023 - Clean Cars for All
DESCRIPTION:Affordability has been a major hurdle keeping people from switching to an electric vehicle. A new program can provide you\, your neighbor\, or a friend with up to $12\,000 toward the purchase or lease of an EV.  This is in addition to tax credits and rebates. \nCome hear about the coming San Diego Clean Cars 4 All Program. Claire Lion and Felix Lopez of GRID Alternatives will explain all the details about eligible zip codes\, the income limits\, incentive amounts\, and eligibility for scrap vehicles. GRID is a non-profit organization that believes in a rapid\, equitable transition to a world powered by renewable energy needs to benefit everyone. \nThe next hurdle buying an EV is finding a way to charge. Claire and Felix will also talk about GRID’s program to use GIS mapping to find sites for EV chargers in underserved areas. This is especially important for new EV owners living in multi-unit housing. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/san-diego-electric-vehicle-association-meetup/events/295272634/) to attend in person\nor REGISTER on Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUofuuopzgsGteu9nistw3dh6o-i1vlsMFR) to attend remotely.

SUMMARY:80eDays Around the World Visit
DESCRIPTION:!!  New Date and Place !! \nCome join us as Rafael de Mestre stops in San Diego on his latest EV drive around the world. \nYou think you have experienced range anxiety? Try traveling around the world in an EV! It took 127 days for Rafael to drive it in a Tesla Roadster in 2012. In 2016 he did it again in a Tesla Model S. Some of his accomplishments include: \n🏆 Winning the first EV race around the world in a STANDARD all-electric vehicle\n🏆 Being the first man to drive ALONE around the world in an electric car\n🏆 Making the FASTEST electric vehicle circumnavigation around the world ever (127 days)\n🏆 Making the LONGEST drive in a standard electric car (17\,574 miles). \nVisit 80eDays.com for more of the project’s history and future plans. \nThis latest trip started in Hamburg\, Germany. The Tesla Roadster was transported emission free over the Atlantic Ocean and the drive resumed from Ft. Lauderdale on July 4th. Along the way he has been stopping to meet with Tesla and EV groups and champion EV adoption. \nHear the Story \nCome to our joint meeting with the San Diego Tesla Club to hear Raphael share his travel insights and discuss opportunities for EV owners in the coming year. He and his team are experts in roadtrip planning and finding places to charge. We’re sure to hear some interesting stories and learn some great travel tips. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup (meetup.com/san-diego-electric-vehicle-association-meetup/events/295049300) if you plan to attend.

SUMMARY:July 2023 - EV Learning Center BBQ
DESCRIPTION:The EV Learning Center has invited us to their facility in San Marcos for a BBQ. \nIn addition to hearing about the EV-LC and its mission\, Michael Bream of EV West will talk about how his company salvages parts from wrecked EVs and uses them to convert old ICE cars into EVs.  This process means a second life for both EVs and classic cars.  Just because an EV is totaled in a wreck doesn’t mean it has no value – batteries\, motors\, controllers\, etc. can be used to convert your favorite ICE car into an EV. Will your car be a donor or a recipient? \nPlease RSVP on meetup so we can tell the EV Learning Center how many to expect. \nNote: Since a BBQ is best enjoyed in person\, there will be no Zoom option this month.

SUMMARY:June 2023 - Optimizing Your Utility Bill\, plus\, Electric Trash Trucks
DESCRIPTION:For June we will revisit the important topic of understanding and optimizing your utility bill. As of June 1st\, the peak rate is over 80¢ per kWh. How do you choose the best rate for your circumstances and how can you shift your usage to minimize your costs? Factors include rate plans\, solar\, batteries\, schedules and now new rules for NEM 3.0 installations.  Our own newsletter editor\, Dave Crow will help provide some answers. \nBut wait\, there’s more! It’s never a favorite chore\, but someone must take away the trash. Republic Services will soon be rolling out four electric garbage trucks. Stephen Herring from Republic will tell how this came about and the challenges that have to be overcome. \nJoin us in person and enjoy some pizza or attend virtually via Zoom. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/san-diego-electric-vehicle-association-meetup/events/294030721/) to attend in person \nor Register on Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYkcOGgrzooE9Bgdsx-hBpWdlccJ_zZMlHo) to join remotely \n

SUMMARY:Mar 2023 - NEM 3.0 / Charger Cable Management
DESCRIPTION:For March we will cover two topics – NEM 3.0 and a proposed cable management solution for home chargers. \nNet Metering 3.0 is scheduled to go into effect this April. It will drastically change how utilities will compensate customers with home solar for excess generation. One of the stated objectives is to encourage home batteries to store the excess rather than on the grid. \nAnyone with a home charger faces the problem of wrangling a thick charge cord on the floor or ground. Susan Linwood will present her solution and show some of the prototypes working in her garage. \nAgain we plan on having a hybrid meeting. Join via Zoom or come in person and enjoy some pizza. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/san-diego-electric-vehicle-association-meetup/events/292098350/) to attend in person \nor Register on Zoom (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwkdeuhrj0tG9RiFSb4vS37Mk9QOOz3Rww3) to join remotely

SUMMARY:Feb 2023 - Electric Car-Boat
DESCRIPTION:At our February meeting\, Dan Wolfson will tell us about Poseidon AmphibWorks development of an electric amphibian. Started by the owner of a Miami duck tour company and an EV designer in San Diego\, Poseidon wants to take advantage the mechanical simplification enabled by electric propulsion and use modern technology to reduce drag when moving through water. Anyone that lives near a body of water will appreciate what promises to be a merger of an Aptera land vehicle with a Candela boat. \nAgain we plan on having a hybrid meeting.
