SUMMARY:October 2024 - Checking Your EV Battery
DESCRIPTION:The traction battery in an EV represents 40-50% of the vehicle’s value. Knowing its health is important when buying or selling a used one. Knowledge is also useful when getting close to warranty expiration. \nFor October\, we will hear from Smartville\, A Carlsbad company that makes a battery pack testing kit that provides insights on electric vehicle battery’s health. Their PeriscopeTM supports a wide range of EV makes and models\, delivering battery diagnostics on both in-vehicle and extracted batteries. It offers EV battery testing with in-depth analysis\, including state-of-health evaluations at the cell\, module\, and pack levels using OEM Battery Management System (BMS) data. \nJoin us to learn about battery health and how it can be tested. Smartville is planning to have a battery assessment tool available for anyone interested and with a compatible vehicle (Tesla 3/Y\, Chevy Bolt/EUV\, Nissan Leafs\, and a few others). Testing will be done in the parking lot after the indoor meeting. \nPlease RSVP on MeetUp so we can plan for pizza.

SUMMARY:September 2024 - Taming the Duck Curve With V2G
DESCRIPTION:A major problem with solar power is that the time of generation does not match up with time of use. This results in what is called the duck curve where there is an over abundance of power mid day and heavy power use in the evening. Batteries are used to store the day excess and give it back in the evening. This adds additional cost to effective use of solar systems. \nBut what if your vehicle’s battery could be used to bridge the supply/usage gap? You’ve already paid for the battery; all you need is the connection.  Vehicle to Grid (V2G) does not need to be used just to supply emergency power during a blackout. V2G has the potential to help both home solar and the utility grid. \nCome hear Jose Torre-Bueno of the Center for Community Energy tell us how this could work and legislation moving forward so that all EVs will be V2G capable. \nPlease RSVP on MeetUp so we can plan for pizza.

SUMMARY:July 2024 - Automotive Technicians for the EV Future
DESCRIPTION:Our July meeting will focus on what is being done to assure that we have technicians ready to service the EVs taking over the market. \nEVs typically go thousands of miles without the need for any maintenance – no oil changes\, tune-ups\, timing belts\, even brake pads. But when they do need service\, EVs need a different skillset than traditional cars. It is a significant transition from mechanical to electrical and computer technology. Some say that EVs are frequently “totaled” after a collision because shops are afraid to repair them. Is this because there is a shortage of qualified technicians? Visit SDTechs.org to learn more about the effort to fill the gap. \nHow does the subject of EV repair impact you as an EV owner? \nCome hear from Omar Sevilla and some of his colleagues about how education is evolving to meet future needs. Omar is an automotive instructor at both the high school and community college level. EV’s were the primary focus of the CHARGED UP 2024 conference held last May in San Diego which Omar helped host. \nJoin us as we meet again at the Automotive Museum and enjoy some pizza. Maybe you know someone that is a candidate for a career in EV technology – bring them along. \n

SUMMARY:May 2024 - Weaning the Home From Natural Gas
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all been enjoying the electric vehicle driving experience. Now it is time to consider switching any gas appliances in our home to electric. Using gas to heat our home’s hot water is a major source of neighborhood air pollution. Heating homes with gas runs a close second as a polluter. While a gas stove may be a favorite of many chefs\, they are a source of indoor pollution. It’s not like we need to immediately go cold turkey\, but it is a good idea to switch when something needs replacing. \nColin Bovet of QuitCarbon will join us via Zoom to explain the advantages and process of switching to all electric. QuitCarbon is a company that provides expertise on projects\, pricing and rebates. Could you benefit from a free home electrification plan? \nPlease REGISTER for the Zoom or join EVAoSD chapter president Keith at the Automotive Museum and have some pizza. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup if you are attending in person so we can reserve you a slice.

SUMMARY:February 2024 - Expanding Level 2 Charging
DESCRIPTION:Charging while your car is not used is the backbone of EV convenience. It makes owning an EV a no-brainer for anyone with a home garage. However\, it’s not so easy for those living in apartments or condominiums. \nCommunities in Charge is a program being administered in San Diego by Grid Alternatives to implement Level 2 charging where communities live and gather. Level 2 charging usually provides about 30 miles of range for each hour connected. It is ideal for overnight and workday charging. \nNorah Kyassa of Grid Alternatives will join us for our February meeting and explain how workplaces and landlords can apply for assistance. The program features per connector benefits such as $3\,500 of eligible costs and even an additional $3\,500 for multi-family housing and tribal entities. Join us to hear all the details and get your questions answered. \nJoin us in person at the San Diego Automotive Museum. Be sure to RSVP so we can plan for pizza. \nOr register to join in via Zoom

SUMMARY:January 2024 - SB350 and you
DESCRIPTION:How does SB350 impact you – both as an EV driver and as a resident of California? How much is a carrot and how much is a stick? \nThe Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act (Senate Bill 350) established clean energy\, clean air\, and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals\, including reducing GHG to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. The California Energy Commission is working with other state agencies to implement the bill. \nJason Greenblatt\, a senior program analyst at Energetics\, will be sharing his insights from the evaluation his team helps produce on progress of public charging and fleet projects across California within SB350. Jason has planned for and reported on EVs for over 15 years. Hear him talk about such topics as public DC fast charging and Vehicle to Grid (V2G). Bring your questions. \nJoin us as we again meet at the San Diego Automotive Museum. Be sure to RSVP so we can plan for pizza. \n  \nNote that the tour of Arcimoto originally scheduled for January had to be postponed due to a plumbing leak at their facility.

SUMMARY:San Diego Auto Show
DESCRIPTION:December means it’s time for the annual San Diego International Auto Show. We will again have a booth and need volunteer staff. Volunteers will answer questions about the EV experience and share information to advance the adoption of EVs. You don’t need to be a subject matter expert – just bring your enthusiasm. The show runs for four days which we will break up into three-hour shifts. Even though the show opens to the public at 10am\, first shift volunteers will need to arrive early to open up the booth. \n \nIf you would like to volunteer\, please go to evaosd.org/volunteer and let us know the days that you can be available (yes more than one if possible) and your preferred time slots (morning\, mid day\, afternoon\, evening). We would like to have at least two people staffing the booth at all times. Details about tickets and parking will be supplied to those responding.

SUMMARY:November 2023 - Thankful for Rivian
DESCRIPTION:Our November meeting will have members of the San Diego Rivian Club talking about the vehicles and ownership experience. They will also give us an opportunity to see both the R1T truck and R1S SUV up close and see what makes them special. \nThe first Rivian R1T was delivered to a customer in September 2021. Now we see R1T pickups\, the R1S SUVs\, and Amazon Rivian delivery vans all over San Diego. Chatty Bialeschki is first president of the newly formed San Diego chapter of the Rivian Owners Club. Like other EV owners\, they love talking about their vehicles. \nCome hear what they have to say and get your questions answered. Don’t forget about the pizza we’ll have for those in attendance. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/san-diego-electric-vehicle-association-meetup/events/297050705/) so we can plan the pizza

SUMMARY:October 2023 - Navigating the Used EV Marketplace
DESCRIPTION:For October we’re putting together a Zoom meeting covering what you need to know about buying or selling a used EV. Keith will be joining from the Automotive Museum for anyone that wants to participate “in person”. Meeting via Zoom will facilitate greater participation by eliminating a long drive through heavy traffic for many members \nWe are working on having used car dealers\, repair shops\, and other businesses give their perspective. We would also like individuals to join in and relate experiences on both sides of the transaction. There will also be some discussion about the incentives available when purchasing a used EV. Bring your questions and we’ll do our best to find you an answer. \nPlease register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIkde2rpjMsGdEiJdssDwZ4UOt_AAioQH8N
